In the fifth episode of the series “Lithium – Experts Speak,” research associate at the Institute of Economics, Aleksandar Matković, raises a direct question: Does Serbia have a clear strategic development plan, or is it surrendering to the interests of foreign corporations?
Matković warns that the Jadar project highlights a broader issue – institutional unpreparedness and the absence of long-term planning, both economic and spatial. In such a context, the public interest and the well-being of the local population become collateral damage, while foreign companies gain disproportionate power over key resources – even over the state itself.
“Foreign investment isn’t when someone gives you a dime and you declare yourself rich. It’s when you give a company control over your land, your country, your nation. That company then makes decisions on your behalf. We simply cannot hand over resources to foreign companies just like that, no matter where they’re located. That shows we’re not looking out for our own people. It’s either the corporations – or us,” Matković emphasizes.
